William J. Martini (1995)

William J. Martini (born February 10, 1947 in Passaic , New Jersey ) is an American lawyer and politician . Between 1995 and 1997 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives ; later he became a federal judge .

Career

William Martini attended Passaic High School and then studied until 1968 at Villanova University in Pennsylvania . After studying law at Rutgers University , he was admitted to the bar in 1972. In 1973, he was the Assistant District Attorney in Hudson County . From 1973 to 1977 he served as the assistant federal attorney for New Jersey. In the following years he practiced as a private lawyer. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He became a Clifton parish council and served on the Passaic County county council from 1992-1994 .

In the 1994 congressional election , Martini was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Herb Klein on January 3, 1995 . Since he was not confirmed in 1996, he was only able to serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1997 . Between 1999 and 2002 Martini served on the Board of Commissioners for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey . In January 2002 he was appointed by US President George W. Bush to succeed John C. Lifland as a judge at the Federal District Court for New Jersey. On February 10, 2015, he switched to senior status and thus effectively retired.
