Passaic County is a county in the state of New Jersey . At the 2000 census , the county had 489,049 people and a population density of 1,019 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Paterson .

The county covers an area of 510 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It borders clockwise to the following counties: Orange County ( New York ), Bergen County , Essex County , Morris County and Sussex County .

According to the 2000 census , the county had a population of 489,049 people. There were 163,856 households and 119,614 families. The population density was 1,019 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.32% White, 13.22% African American, 0.44% Native American, 3.69% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 16.24% other races Groups; 4.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 29.95% of the population.
Of the 163,856 households, 35.60% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 51.50% were married couples living together, 16.00% were single mothers. 27.00% were not families. 22.20% were single households and 9.50% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.92 and the average family size was 3.42 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.10% residents under 18 years of age, 9.30% between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 12.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 94.00 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 90.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 49,210 , and the median income for a family is $ 56,054. Males had a median income of $ 38,740 versus $ 29,954 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,370. 12.30% of the population and 9.40% of families are below the poverty line. 17.30% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.20% were 65 years of age or older.
