Passaic County is a county in the state of New Jersey . At the 2000 census , the county had 489,049 people and a population density of 1,019 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Paterson .

According to the 2000 census , the county had a population of 489,049 people. There were 163,856 households and 119,614 families. The population density was 1,019 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.32% White, 13.22% African American, 0.44% Native American, 3.69% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 16.24% other races Groups; 4.05% from two or more races.
