George C. Maxwell

George Clifford Maxwell (born May 31, 1771 in Sussex County , Province of New Jersey , †  March 16, 1816 in Flemington , New Jersey ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1811 and 1813 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Maxwell attended the College of New Jersey until 1792 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1797, he began to work in Hunterdon County in this profession. In 1801, he succeeded Frederick Frelinghuysen as a federal attorney for the district of New Jersey. He also embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party .

In the congressional election of 1810 , Maxwell was elected for the fourth seat of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John A. Scudder on March 4, 1811 . Until March 3, 1813, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . During this time the British-American War began . After his time in the US House of Representatives, George Maxwell practiced as a lawyer again. He died in Flemington on March 16, 1816. His son John (1804-1845) was also a member of Congress.
