James Morgan (politician)

James Morgan (born December 29, 1756 in Amboy , Middlesex County , Province of New Jersey , †  November 11, 1822 in South Amboy , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1811 and 1813 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Morgan attended public schools in his home country. During the War of Independence he was an officer in the Continental Army . After the war, he began his political career in Pennsylvania . Between 1794 and 1799 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; after that he returned to Jew Jersey. He became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson in the late 1790s .

In the congressional election of 1810 , Morgan was elected for the fifth seat of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Henry Southard on March 4, 1811 . Until March 3, 1813, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . During this time the British-American War of 1812 began . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Morgan worked in agriculture. He also became a major general in the New Jersey State Militia. He died in South Amboy on November 11, 1822.
