Hugh Joseph Addonizio (born January 31, 1914 in Newark , New Jersey , †  February 2, 1981 in Red Bank , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1962 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hugh Addonizio attended public schools in his home country including West Side High School and St. Benedict's Prep School , which he graduated from in 1935. He then studied until 1939 at Fordham University in New York City . From 1939 he worked for the A&C Clothing Company , of which he became vice president in 1946. During World War II , he served in the United States Army until February 1946 . By the time he left military service, he had made it to the position of captain.

Politically, Addonizio was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1948 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eleventh constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Frank Sundstrom on January 3, 1949 . After six re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on June 30, 1962 . During his time in Congress, the Cold War began , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement .

Addonizio's resignation came after he was elected mayor of Newark to succeed Leo P. Carlin . He held this office until 1970. He spent his old age in Tinton Falls and died on February 2, 1981 in Red Bank.
