John Bancker Aycrigg

John Bancker Aycrigg (born July 9, 1798 in New York City , †  November 8, 1856 in Passaic , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1843 he represented the state of New Jersey twice in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After finishing school, John Aycrigg studied medicine at Columbia University in New York until 1818 . After his admission as a doctor, he began practicing this profession there. He later moved his residence and practice to Paramus , New Jersey. Politically, he became a member of the Whig Party , founded in the mid-1830s .

In the congressional elections of 1836 he was elected for the second seat of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Samuel Fowler on March 4, 1837 . Until March 3, 1839, he was initially able to complete a legislative period in Congress . Then the Democrat William Raworth Cooper was elected to succeed him. In 1840 John Aycrigg made it back into Congress, where he replaced Cooper on March 4, 1841, and served another term until March 3, 1843. This period was marked by tension between President John Tyler and the Whigs. In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed.

In 1842, John Aycrigg renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked as a doctor again. He died on November 8, 1856 in Passaic, where he had meanwhile moved.
