Augustus Albert Hardenbergh
Augustus Albert Hardenbergh (born May 18, 1830 in New Brunswick , New Jersey , † October 5, 1889 in Jersey City , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 and again from 1881 to 1883 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Augustus Hardenbergh attended Rutgers College in New Brunswick until 1844 . In 1846 he moved to Jersey City. He worked as a bank clerk in neighboring New York . In 1852 he was employed by the Hudson County National Bank . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1853 and 1854 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly . He was then a member of the Education Committee between 1855 and 1856. Hardenbergh also served on the Jersey City Council from 1857 to 1863, chairing it in 1860. In 1863 he moved to Bergen , where he became a member of the local council. In 1868 Hardenbergh was named state commissioner for the railroad in New Jersey; at that time he moved to Demarest . In July 1872 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore , on which Horace Greeley was nominated as a presidential candidate. From 1873 Hardenbergh lived in Jersey City again; the following year he became president of the Northern Railroad of New Jersey .
In the congressional elections of 1874 Hardenbergh was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Isaac W. Scudder on March 4, 1875 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1879 . In 1878 he decided not to run again. In the same year he became president of the Hudson County National Bank .
In 1880 he successfully competed for return to Congress. There he replaced Lewis A. Brigham on March 4, 1881 , who had been his successor two years earlier. In 1882 Hardenbergh was no longer a candidate. So he left the US House of Representatives on March 3, 1883. Between 1889 and 1889 he was a member of the Jersey City Finance and Tax Committee. In 1884 he became a curator of the State Reform School . He died in Jersey City on October 5, 1889 and was buried in Newark .
