John E. Hunt (1973)

John Edmund Hunt (born November 25, 1908 in Lambertville , Hunterdon County , New Jersey , †  September 22, 1989 in Woodbury , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1975 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Hunt attended public schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He then studied at Newark Business School for three years . He then continued his training in the police and security sector. He attended the New Jersey Police Academy, the FBI Academy, and the Law School of Harvard University . He was also enrolled in the Army Intelligence School . From 1930 to 1959 Hunt was a forensic advisor to the New Jersey Police Department. During World War II he served as an intelligence officer in the United States Army . By the end of the war he had made it to major. For his achievements in the war he has been awarded several medals, including the Bronze Star , the Presidential Unit Citation and the Purple Heart . From 1946 to 1963 he was a lieutenant colonel in the intelligence service of the army reserve. Between 1959 and 1963 he was Sheriff's chief of police in Gloucester County . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1963 he was elected to the New Jersey Senate, where he remained until 1966.

In the 1966 congressional election , Hunt was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded William T. Cahill on January 3, 1967 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1975 . During this time the Vietnam War ended . In 1974 the Watergate Affair rocked American political life. This affair damaged the Republican Party and its candidates in the 1974 election. John Hunt was also affected by this trend: he was defeated by the Democrat James Florio .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Hunt withdrew from politics. He died in Woodbury on September 22, 1989.
