Gene Andrew Maguire (born March 11, 1939 in Columbus , Ohio ) is an American politician . Between 1975 and 1981 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

He is not to be confused with a namesake who has been known as a whistleblower since late 2009 .

Career

Andrew Maguire attended Budlong Elementary School in Los Angeles and then, until 1956, Ridgewood High School in New Jersey. He then studied philosophy at Oberlin College in Ohio until 1961 and then at Harvard University until 1966 . From 1966 to 1969 Maguire worked as a consultant for the US State Department . At that time he was a member of the American delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations five times . From 1969 to 1972 he was responsible for the urban development program in the New York district of Jamaica . He was then an advisor to the Ford Foundation until 1974 .

Politically, Maguire became a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1974 congressional election , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the seventh constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded William B. Widnall on January 3, 1975 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1981 . In 1980 he was defeated by Republican Marge Roukema .

In 1982 Maguire applied unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . At that time he was working as an employment and industrial consultant. In 1983, Maguire was a faculty member of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University . From 1984 to 1987 he was Vice President of the World Resources Institute ; between 1987 and 1989 he served as director of the North American Securities Administrators Association . Between 1990 and 2002 he was President of EnterpriseWorks Worldwide . From 2007 to 2009 he was Managing Director of the GAVI Fund 's 'Immunize Every Child Campaign' .
