John Linn

John Linn (born December 3, 1763 in Johnsonburg , Warren County , Province of New Jersey , †  January 5, 1821 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1821 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In his early teens, John Linn moved with his father to Sussex County , where he attended public schools. During the War of Independence he was a soldier in the Continental Army . At the turn of the century, Linn became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . Between 1801 and 1804 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly . From 1805 he was a judge at a court of appeal. In 1812 he served as Sheriff's chief of police in Sussex County.

In the congressional elections of 1816 Linn was elected for the second seat of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he succeeded Thomas Ward on March 4, 1817 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his death on January 5, 1821 .
