William H. Wiley

William Halsted Wiley (born July 10, 1842 in New York City , †  May 2, 1925 in East Orange , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1911 he twice represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Wiley attended private schools and then until 1861 the College of the City of New York . During the civil war he served in the Union army until 1864 . In doing so, he rose to major in brevet. After the war he continued his education at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy . He then attended Columbia College School of Mines until 1868 . He then worked in the construction industry. For a few years he also ran a mine. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1886 to 1888 he sat on the East Orange parish council, chairing it for one year. In 1904 he was a member of the New Jersey commission at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis .

In the congressional elections of 1902 Wiley was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Charles N. Fowler on March 4, 1903 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1907 . In 1906 he was not nominated for re-election by his party. After another election in 1908, he was able to spend another term in the US House of Representatives between March 4, 1909 and March 3, 1911. He was the successor to Le Gage Pratt , who had since taken over his mandate in 1907. In 1910 he was not re-elected.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Wiley worked as a publisher in New York. He lived in East Orange. During the First World War he was a representative of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers . He was also chairman of the National Preparedness Committee . William Wiley died in East Orange on May 2, 1925.
