William J. Hughes

William John Hughes (born October 17, 1932 in Salem , Salem County , New Jersey - † October 30, 2019 in Ocean City , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1975 and 1995 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives ; from 1995 to 1998 he was the United States Ambassador to Panama .

Career

William Hughes attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1955 at Rutgers University in New Brunswick . After studying law at the Rutgers School of Law in Camden and being admitted to the bar in 1959, he began working in this profession in Ocean City. Between 1961 and 1970 he worked in various positions as a public prosecutor. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1970 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress . In 1972 he became a member of an advisory committee of the ethics committee.

In the 1974 congressional election , Hughes was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the second constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Charles W. Sandman on January 3, 1975 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1995. There he was a member of the Legal Committee and the Committee on the Merchant Navy and Fisheries. In 1986, he was one of the MPs charged with conducting impeachment proceedings against Federal Judge Harry E. Claiborne . Hughes also advocated environmental issues in Parliament. In 1994 he decided not to run again for Congress.

In 1995, Hughes was named United States Ambassador to Panama by President Bill Clinton to succeed Oliver P. Garza . He held this office until 1998, when the Panama Canal Zone was returned to the State of Panama. William Hughes had been married since 1956; he had four children and eight grandchildren.
