Thomas M. Ferrell

Thomas Merrill Ferrell (born June 20, 1844 in Glassboro , Gloucester County , New Jersey , †  October 20, 1916 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Ferrell attended public schools in his home country and then completed an academic education. In the following years he worked in the glass industry. Between 1878 and 1883 he was President of the Hollow Ware Glassworkers' Association . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1872 and 1873 he was a member of the city council of his home parish; from 1885 to 1890 he was a member of the local school committee. In 1887 he served as its president. From 1879 to 1880 Ferrell was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly , after which he sat in the State Senate from 1880 to 1881 .

In the congressional election of 1882 , Ferrell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded George M. Robeson on March 4, 1883 . Since he was defeated by the Republican George Hires in 1884 , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1885 . After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Ferrell worked as a salesman for glass products. He died on October 20, 1916 in his birthplace Glassboro, where he was also buried.
