Henry S. Harris

Henry Schenck Harris (born December 27, 1850 in Belvidere , New Jersey , †  May 2, 1902 there ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Harris attended the public schools of his home country and then studied at Princeton College until 1870 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1873, he began to work in this profession in Belvidere. In 1877 he was a District Attorney in Warren County . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1880 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Alvah A. Clark on March 4, 1881 . Since he was defeated by Republican Benjamin Franklin Howey in 1882 , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1883 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Henry Harris practiced as a lawyer again. He died on May 2, 1902 in his birthplace Belvidere, where he was also buried.
