Andy N. Kim (born July 12, 1982 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Since January 3, 2019, he has represented the 3rd Congressional constituency of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives . Kim is the first Democratic Party Congressman with Korean roots, the second overall.

Professional background

Andy Kim was born in Boston to Korean parents. His father was engaged in research into diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's . His mother was a nurse. Kim later grew up with a sister in Cherry Hill , New Jersey, where he attended Cherry Hill High School East. After graduation, he first attended Deep Springs College , then the University of Chicago , from which he graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science . While in college, Kim was an intern with the United States Agency for International Development . After graduating from the University of Chicago, he received a Rhodes Scholarship , which enabled him to study at the University of Oxford . There he worked on a dissertation in the field of international relations , which earned him a Ph.D. brought in.

Kim began his professional career in the State Department as an advisor to Generals David Petraeus and John R. Allen during the Afghanistan mission. Kim later served as a National Security Adviser under Barack Obama's presidency . He was later also a member of the United States National Security Council .

politics

Kim decided to run for the 116th Congress of the United States for the 3rd seat of the state of New Jersey against Tom MacArthur of the Republican Party . He received support during the election campaign from, among others, Barack Obama, ex- Vice President Joe Biden and the actress Piper Perabo . One of his main reasons for running in the poll was because of the bill repealing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act . In the election Kim was able to prevail against MacArthur with 50% of the vote. This was enough since the Constitution Party's independent third candidate Larry Berlinski received 1.3% of the vote.

After entering Congress, Kim was one of the MPs who voted for Democrat Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House . In Congress, Kim serves on the United States House Committee on Armed Services and United States House Committee on Small Business, as well as other subcommittees.

Private

Kim is married to Kammy Lai. Together they are the parents of two children and live privately in Marlton , New Jersey.
