Albio Sires

Albio Sires (born January 26, 1951 in Bejucal , Cuba ) is an American politician . Since 2006 he has represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Albio Sires attended Memorial High School in West New York . He then graduated from St. Peter's College in Jersey City until 1974 . In 1985 he graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont . He worked as a businessman and a teacher. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1986 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives. Between 1995 and 2007, Sires was Mayor of West New York City, after he failed in the 1991 election and in 1993 when incumbent Anthony DeFino was voted out of office . From 2000 to 2006 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly , of which he served since 2002.

After the resignation of MP Bob Menendez , who moved to the US Senate , Sires was elected in the due by-election for the 13th seat of New Jersey as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he was on November 13th In 2006 he took up his new mandate. After having been confirmed in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2018, he can continue to exercise his mandate in Congress to this day. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. Since 2013, he has represented the eighth constituency in Congress. He is or was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure as well as four sub-committees. He was also a member of the non-partisan Congressional Cuba Democracy Caucus .

Sires is married and lives privately in West New York.
