Bejucal

Bejucal is a city and a municipality in the Cuban province of Mayabeque . Until 2010 the municipality was part of the dissolved province of La Habana .

It has approx. 20,500 inhabitants in a municipal area of ​​approx. 75 km² and is located south of the Cuban capital Havana . In the north it is bordered by Santiago de las Vegas , in the east San Antonio de las Vegas and Batabanó in the south on La Salud and in the west on San Antonio de los Baños .

In the 1990s, a satellite communication system was built with the help of Russia . She represents u. a. connects Cuba to the internet. Since an agreement between Cuba and the People's Republic of China in 1999, Chinese communications satellites have also been used. There are reports that the station in Bejucal is also used for electronic reconnaissance against the USA.

Bejucal was the terminus of Cuba's first railway line from Havana to Bejucal. When the line opened on November 19, 1837 , it was the first steam train line in Latin America. Railways were only in operation in a few countries in Europe and the USA; the mother country Spain did not yet have a railway line. (see also Ferrocarriles de Cuba )
