Melena del Sur is a municipality and a city in the Cuban province of Mayabeque . Until 2010 the municipality was part of the dissolved province of La Habana . It has 20,646 inhabitants on an area of 228.46 km², which corresponds to a population density of 91.0 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Melena del Sur is bordered by San José de las Lajas to the north and northwest , Güines to the east and Batabanó to the west . The southern border is the Ensenada de la Broa bay . There is also Playa Mayabeque and the mouth of one of the largest rivers in the country, the Río Mayabeque .
The settlement was officially founded in 1768.
