Batabanó is a city and municipality located on the Gulf of Batabanó in the south of the Cuban province Mayabeque . Until 2010 the municipality was part of the dissolved province of La Habana .
The origins of the city go back to an indigenous settlement. The region was called Matabanó by its inhabitants . In 1688, today's settlement was officially founded. Batabanó became the capital of the municipality of the same name in 1898. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, numerous Mallorcan emigrants came to Batabanó, most of whom came from the town of Andratx and who at that time lived from sponge diving .
The municipality has 25,664 inhabitants on an area of 186.2 km², which corresponds to a population density of 137 inhabitants per square kilometer.
The port, which historically and nowadays serves trade with the Isla de la Juventud , fishing and, due to the fertile soil, agriculture is particularly important from an economic point of view . Rice and banana cultivation is particularly important here.
The region offers a rich flora and fauna. The great egret , the northern gannet and the turkey vulture are at home here, for example. Tree rats and the Cuban boa also live here .
