Santa Cruz del Norte is a municipality in the Cuban province of Mayabeque . Until 2010 the municipality was part of the dissolved province of La Habana . The main town and administrative seat of the municipality is the city of the same name, Santa Cruz del Norte .

Municipio Santa Cruz del Norte

From 1899 to 1902, Santa Cruz del Norte was already a municipality, then in 1933 it was once again run as a municipality. In addition to the city of Santa Cruz, major places in the municipality are Jibacoa and Boca Jaruco. The size of the municipality is 131 km².

City of Santa Cruz del Norte

The city of Santa Cruz del Norte was founded in 1800 . The location at the mouth of the Santa Cruz River was essential for the founding of the city, resulting in the settlement of fisheries, later the sugar cane plantations and the sugar factory, which today bears the name "Camillo Cienfuegos". In 1919 the rum distillery "Habana Club" was founded on the east bank of the river, which today still markets different types of rum under the name Havana Club .

The city of Santa Cruz del Norte today consists of two parts, the old town of Santa Cruz del Norte and the new development area, which is west of the old town. More people now live in the new district than in the actual old town. The buildings were built by the microbrigadas - exempted workers of all qualifications - of the regional companies, so mainly employees of these companies live in the blocks of this area.

Today Santa Cruz del Norte is one of the industrial suburbs of Havana and was once planned as a model socialist settlement.
