The mayabeque river is the largest and most important river of the province Mayabeque in Cuba , which runs from north to south. The historic town of Güines lies on its banks . Its water ends on the shores of Playa Mayabeque in Melena del Sur .

The earliest mention of it dates back to 1509, just 17 years after the first Europeans arrived in Cuba .
