Mayabeque is one of the two new provinces in Cuba , which emerged on January 1, 2011 from the division of the Havana Land province . The province is named after the river Río Mayabeque .

Mayabeque consists of the eastern part of the old Havana Land province. In the west it borders on the province of Artemisa , which was also founded in 2011 , in the northwest on the capital Havana and in the east on the province of Matanzas . The northern border forms the coastline to the Florida Strait and the Gulf of Batabanó borders in the south .

The province of Mayabeque consists of 13 municipalities and has 381,466 inhabitants on an area of ​​3733 km², which corresponds to a population density of 102.2 per square kilometer. The capital of the province is San José de las Lajas .
