Hedge Thompson

Hedge Thompson (born January 28, 1780 in Salem , Salem County , New Jersey , †  July 23, 1828 there ) was an American politician . In 1827 and 1828 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hedge Thompson attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and his license as a doctor in 1802, he began to work in Salem in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1805 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly ; in 1819 he was a member of the New Jersey Legislative Council , later the State Senate . After he could work less and less as a doctor for health reasons, he devoted himself to law as well as politics. He was a district judge in Salem County in 1815 and 1824. In 1826 he became head of the tax authorities in this district.

In the congressional election of 1826 , Thompson was elected as an independent candidate for the first seat of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded George Cassedy on March 4, 1827 . He held this mandate until his death on July 23, 1828. He died of liver disease and was buried in his hometown of Salem.
