Charles Browne (politician)

Charles Browne (born September 28, 1875 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  August 17, 1947 in Princeton , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1923 and 1925 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Browne attended private schools in his home country and then studied at Princeton University until 1896 . After a subsequent medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and his admission as a doctor in 1900, he began to work in this profession. Between 1902 and 1903 he completed his training with studies at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin . From 1912 to 1914 he was entrusted with the poor relief in Princeton. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was Mayor of Princeton from 1914 to 1923. This activity rested 1917-1919, when he during the First World War in the medical service of first lieutenant or captain United States Army served.

In the 1922 congressional elections , Browne was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Republican Elijah C. Hutchinson on March 4, 1923 . Since he lost to Charles Aubrey Eaton in 1924 , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1925 . Between 1925 and 1931, Browne was a member of the New Jersey State Utilities Commission. From 1937 to 1939 and again from 1941 to 1942 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly . He was also an advisor to Princeton University's political department. Charles Browne died on August 17, 1947 in Princeton, where he was also buried.
