Lewis J. Martin (born February 22, 1844 in Deckertown , Sussex County , New Jersey , †  May 5, 1913 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . In 1913 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lewis Martin attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his license to practice law in 1867, he began to work in Branchville in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1868 and 1869 he was an officer in the county council in Sussex County. From 1879 to 1881 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly . After that, Martin was a district judge in Sussex County between 1881 and 1896. From 1896 to 1911 he acted as legal advisor to the district council. In 1911, Martin was reappointed district judge. He was also a city councilor from 1896 to 1907 and a member of the state senate from 1898 to 1903 .

In the 1912 congressional election , Martin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the sixth constituency of New Jersey, where he succeeded Archibald C. Hart on March 4, 1913 . He was only able to exercise this mandate for two months until his death on May 5, 1913. In the subsequent by-election, his predecessor Hart was also elected as his successor. Lewis Martin was buried in Newton .
