James C. Auchincloss (1943)

James Coats Auchincloss (born January 19, 1885 in New York City , †  October 2, 1976 in Alexandria , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1965 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Auchincloss attended the Cutler School in New York and the Groton School in Massachusetts . He then studied at Yale University until 1908 . He then worked on the New York Stock Exchange between 1908 and 1940 , where he was governor from 1921 to 1938. From 1909 and 1913, Auchincloss was also a member of the New Jersey National Guard. During the First World War he was a captain in the intelligence service. He later also served as the New York City Deputy Police Commissioner. James Auchincloss was the founder, president, and chairman of the New York Better Business Bureau . He also began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1930 to 1937 he was a member of the Rumson Borough Council in New Jersey; from 1938 to 1943 he was mayor there.

In the 1942 congressional election , Auchincloss was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded William H. Sutphin on January 3, 1943 . After ten re-elections, he was able to complete eleven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1965 . These were initially shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences. His time in Congress also saw the start of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . In addition, the Vietnam War began at that time . In 1951, 1961 and 1964 the 22nd , 23rd and 24th amendments were ratified.

In 1964, James Auchincloss declined to run again for Congress. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he withdrew from politics. He died in Alexandria on October 2, 1976 and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx .
