Joshua S. "Josh" Gottheimer (born March 8, 1975 in North Caldwell , New Jersey ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2017, he has represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Between 1993 and 1997, Josh Gottheimer studied American history at the University of Pennsylvania . From 1997 to 1999 he studied Modern History at the University of Oxford in England. After studying law at Harvard University between 2001 and 2004 , he was admitted to the bar.

Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1996 he supported Bill Clinton's presidential campaign . From 1998 to 2001 he was one of the President's speechwriters. In 2004 and 2008 he supported the Democratic presidential candidates John Kerry and Hillary Clinton , who then lost to Barack Obama in the primary elections. In 2005 and 2006, Gottheimer worked as a department director for strategic communications for the Ford plant . From 2009 to 2011, Gottheimer was visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Between 2010 and 2012 he also served as an advisor to the US Civil Rights Commission . From 2012 to 2015 he worked for Microsoft as a strategy manager.

In the 2016 congressional election , Gottheimer was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Republican Scott Garrett , whom he defeated in the election, on January 3, 2017 . He was also elected for another term in 2018. Together with his Republican colleague Tom Reed from New York , Gottheimer founded the Problem Solvers Caucus in 2017 , a working group of MPs from both parties to find non-partisan solutions.
