Phineas Jones

Phineas Jones (born April 18, 1819 in Spencer , Worcester County , Massachusetts , †  April 19, 1884 in Newark , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Phineas Jones attended the public schools in his home country. Later he worked in handicrafts and in trade. In 1855 he moved to Elizabeth , New Jersey. There he sat on the city council from 1856 to 1860. From 1860 he lived in Newark. At this time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He became vice president of the New Jersey Agricultural Association. In 1873 and 1874 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly .

In the congressional election of 1880 Jones was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded John L. Blake on March 4, 1881 . Since he refused to run again in 1882, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1883 . After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Phineas Jones retired. He died in Newark on April 19, 1884, the day after his 65th birthday.
