Robert Douglas "Bob" Franks (* 21st September 1951 in Glen Rock , New Jersey ; †  9. April 2010 in New York City ) was an American politician of the Republican Party .

biography

After schooling Bob Franks initially completed an undergraduate degree ( Undergraduate Study ) at DePauw University in Indiana . He then completed a postgraduate degree in law at Southern Methodist University in Texas in 1976. He then worked as a political advisor in New Jersey from 1976 to 1978.

Franks later became one of the leading politicians of the Republican Party in New Jersey and for this from 1978 to 1992 a member of the lower house of the state parliament, the New Jersey General Assembly . During this time he was considered a protégé of Thomas Kean , the governor of New Jersey from 1982 to 1990. In addition, he was both manager of the Congressional campaign and 1987 to 1989 and 1990 to 1992 chairman of the Republican Party of the state.

In 1992 he was elected a member of the United States House of Representatives. There he represented after his re-elections in 1994, 1996 and 1998 from January 3, 1993 to January 3, 2001, the 7th Congressional constituency of New Jersey . During his membership in Congress he was considered a conservative in tax policy and a liberal in social policy , who also advocated a modification of abortion policy and a reorganization of campaign financing in his party . Franks was a member of the House of Representatives Transport Committee.

In 2000 he ran for the class 1 seat of the state of New Jersey in the US Senate , but was defeated in the election with 47:50 percent of the vote to his opponent from the Democratic Party , Jon Corzine . Nevertheless, he became a personal friend of Corzine and worked for him at times as a consultant. Franks ran for the Republican Party's nomination for governor in 2001, unsuccessfully.

He then became director of the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey, a lobby for pharmaceutical and medical technology companies. Franks died in April 2010 of complications from cancer.
