William G. Steele

William Gaston Steele (born December 17, 1820 in Somerville , New Jersey , †  April 22, 1892 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1861 and 1865 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Steele attended the public schools in his home country as well as the Somerville Academy . Then he worked in the banking industry. He also began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1860 , Steele was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Garnett Adrain on March 4, 1861 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1865 , which were shaped by the events of the civil war .

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, William Steele worked as a stockbroker. He died on April 22, 1892 in his native Somerville, where he was also buried.
