Donald Milford Payne Jr. (born December 17, 1958 in Newark , New Jersey ) is an American politician . Since November 6, 2012, he has represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Donald Payne is the son of the same name Congressman Donald M. Payne (1934–2012). He attended Kean University , where he studied graphic arts. He then served as an advisor to the YMCA's Youth in Government Program . Between 1990 and 1996 he worked for the New Jersey State Highway Department. He also served on the Educational Services Commission in Essex County . He was also a member of the local county council and was a member of the Newark City Council between 2006 and 2012, and served as its president since 2010. Politically, he is a member of the Democratic Party .

In the by-election after his father's death and in the simultaneous regular congressional elections in 2012 , Payne was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of New Jersey , where he took up his new mandate on November 6, 2012. While he remained unopposed in the by-election, he prevailed in the regular election with 87:11 percent of the vote against Republican Brian Kelemen. Due to the strength of the Democrats in this district, the inner-party primary usually anticipates the actual election result. After two re-elections so far in 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

Donald Payne is married and has triplets. The family lives in Newark.
