Scott Garrett

Ernest Scott Garrett (born July 9, 1959 in Englewood , New Jersey ) is an American politician . From 2003 to 2017 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

He was nominated by President Donald Trump to head the Export-Import Bank of the United States , but rejected in December 2017 with 13 to 10 votes by the US Senate Banking Committee.

Career

Scott Garrett attended Montclair State University until 1981 and then studied law at the Law School of Rutgers University in Camden . After graduating, he worked as a lawyer after his admission in 1984. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1990 and 2002 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly .

In the 2002 election to the United States House of Representatives , Garrett was elected to the US House of Representatives for the fifth congressional constituency of New Jersey and succeeded Marge Roukema on January 3, 2003 , to whom he was defeated in the party primaries of 1998 and 2000 was. He was a member of the Budget Committee and the Finance Committee and two sub-committees. He headed the Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government-Sponsored Enterprises .

Since he was defeated by the Democrat Josh Gottheimer after six re- elections in the November 2016 election, he resigned from Congress on January 3, 2017. In April 2017, President Trump nominated him as President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States , an institution that both had previously opposed to. However, Garrett was not approved by the Senate.

Scott Garrett is married and lives in Wantage .

Garrett was considered a conservative within his party. He advocates teaching intelligent design in schools alongside evolutionary theory .
