John Beatty

John Beatty (born December 10, 1749 in Neshaminy , Bucks County , Province of Pennsylvania , †  May 30, 1826 in Trenton , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1793 and 1795 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Beatty grew up during the British colonial era. He attended the College of New Jersey until 1769 , which later became Princeton University . After a subsequent medical degree in Philadelphia and his license as a doctor, he began to work in Bucks County in this profession. At the beginning of the American Revolution , Beatty joined this movement. During the War of Independence , he served in the Continental Army between 1775 and 1780 . In the meantime he was taken prisoner of war. After a prisoner exchange, he was appointed as a colonel commissioner for the prisoners of war. In March 1780 he retired from military service. In the following years Beatty practiced as a doctor in Princeton . At the same time he began a political career. From 1781 to 1783 he was a member of the State Council , the forerunner of the State Senate . In 1784 and 1785 he sat in the Continental Congress . In 1787 Beatty was a member of the convention that ratified the United States Constitution for New Jersey . In 1789 and 1790 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly , which he then chaired.

Beatty was a supporter of the federal government under President George Washington . In the New Jersey state-wide congressional elections of 1792 , he was elected for the fourth seat of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives, which was then still in Philadelphia , where he succeeded Aaron Kitchell on March 4, 1793 . Until March 3, 1795 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . From 1793 to 1796, John Beatty was Brigadier General of the Somerset Militia ; between 1795 and 1805 he was Secretary of State, the executive officer of the state government of New Jersey. From 1787 to 1802 he also served as the curator of the College of New Jersey . He was President of Trenton Banking Co. from 1815 until his death . John Beatty died in Trenton on May 30, 1826.
