George Middleton (politician, 1809)
George Middleton (born October 14, 1809 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † December 31, 1888 in Allentown , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1863 and 1865 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In his youth, George Middleton moved to Burlington , New Jersey, where he attended public schools. Then he learned the trade of tanner , in which he later worked. After moving to Allentown, he held several local offices in that town. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1858 and 1859 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly .
In the congressional elections of 1862 Middleton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Republican John Stratton on March 4, 1863 . Since he lost to William A. Newell in 1864 , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1865 . This was shaped by the events of the civil war .
After his time in the US House of Representatives, George Middleton worked again as a tanner. Politically, he no longer appeared. He died in Allentown on December 31, 1888.
