Burlington is a small town in Burlington County , New Jersey , United States , and is also a suburb of Philadelphia . In the 2010 census , 9,920 inhabitants were registered there.

Burlington lies on the Delaware River and is connected to Bristol , Pennsylvania by a bridge . The River Line light rail line from Trenton to Camden has two stations in the city: Burlington Towne Center and Burlington South .

history

After the conquest of Jersey from the Netherlands in 1664, the English Crown divided Jersey into two parts under the Lord Proprietors . After Lord Berkeley had sold the land allocated to him to the Quakers , English Quaker settlers founded the settlement of Burlington around 1677, which also served as the administrative seat of West Jersey from 1674 to 1702. After that, both parts of Jersey were merged again into a crown colony and administered from Perth Amboy .

The writer James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) came from Burlington .
