River Line
The River Line is a NJ Transit- operated mass transit route that connects New Jersey's capital, Trenton , with Camden . The route opened on March 15, 2004.
The River Line vehicles run on a former Conrail branch line and also take part in urban road traffic in Camden and Trenton. While the diesel railcars used are considered normal railroad vehicles in Europe, they are viewed as light rail in the USA . The concept is called tram-train ( tram / light rail uses railway infrastructure).
route
The 50-kilometer route mostly runs along the Delaware River , hence the name River Line. The partly single-lane route stops at 20 stations, in Camden you can change to PATCO , which leads to Philadelphia . On weekdays the trains can only run during the day, at night the route is occupied by freight trains.
vehicles
It run 20 diesel-powered light railcars of the type Stadler GTW (GTW). Each vehicle consists of 2 end cars, in which the passengers can be accommodated, as well as a middle section in which the drive equipment is housed. The wheels of the middle section are driven. A truck MTU V12 diesel engine of the 12V183TD13 series, which has been modified for rail applications and is directly coupled to an electrical generator, serves as the drive . This supplies the two electric motors that drive the middle section via an air-cooled converter . The trains were manufactured in a joint project between Bombardier and Stadler Rail .
