The MetroRail Houston , known as METRO for short, is the second light rail system in Texas after the Dallas Area Rapid Transit . Local public transport was opened on January 1, 2004 on an above-ground 12 km long line with 16 stops (Red Line). At the end of 2013, an extension of the line by a further 8.5 km was put into operation. Two more new lines were opened in 2015.

The operator is the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County . The vehicle fleet consists of 37 Siemens Avanto low-floor trams and 39 others of the CAF Urbos type .
