Rotweg Chapel Visnitz

The Alpe Visnitz is located in the municipality of Kappl ( Tyrol ). It extends over the entire Visnitz valley, which is a small side valley in the Paznaun valley . The Visnitzkopf rises above the valley . The Alpe Visnitz lies in the mountains of the Samnaun group .

The name Visnitz comes from Rhaeto-Romanic , the name conceals the Latin vis , which means 'neighbor'. The Rhaeto-Romans from the Engadine settled the Paznaun Obertal (Ischgl and Galtür) around 1000 AD. Although they did not use the wild Untertal as permanent living space, they did develop some alpine pastures such as the Visnitz and Dias . The Bavarians, who only settled in the Untertal approx. 300 years later (settlement wave of the High Middle Ages), then probably took over the already existing Romansh names.
