The Samnaun group is a mountain group in the central eastern Alps . Austria with the state of Tyrol and Switzerland with the canton of Graubünden have a share . In the Samnaun group there are several large winter sports areas that devalue parts of the group for mountain tourism in summer. Nevertheless, the group still has larger, unspoilt and isolated mountain areas. The group has some three thousand meter peaks. However, there is no major glaciation as in the neighboring Silvretta. The mountain group is named after the Swiss town of Samnaun , which is located in the only inhabited valley within the group.

Surname

As is often the case, the group is named after the valley that penetrates deepest into the group, the Swiss Samnaun , that is the valley of the Schergenbach , a left tributary of the Inn near Finstermünz . The valley (at the lower reaches it is called Val da Tschera ) penetrates westward grazing into the southwest-northeast trending chain.

Boundary and neighboring mountain groups

In the north, the Paznaun , the Trisanna valley , and the lower Sanna form the border to Landeck . The Inn forms the border in the east and south-east . The border in the northern ridge of the Central Alps ( Rätikon - Silvretta - Samnaun) can be seen on the Fimber Pass at the Heidelberger Hut , one of the few good crossings in this chain. The eastern boundary is the great knee of the Inn, which here penetrates the central Alpine ridge and from then on forms the northern boundary of the same.

According to the Alpine Club division of the Eastern Alps (AVE) , the Samnaun group (No. 27) is bordered by the line:

in the northwest the Paznaun Valley (the Trisanna) from Ischgl to Wiesberg to the Verwall group (28)
in the north the Sanna to Landeck to the Lechtal Alps (3b) of the Northern Eastern Alps (Northern Alps)
in the east and southeast of the Inn up to the Finstermünzpass (orographic: confluence of the Stillebach ) to the Ötztal Alps (30)
in the south of the Inn to the confluence of the Brancla with the Sesvenna group (29)
in the west Val Sinestra (Brancla) - Val Chöglias ( Aua Chöglias ) - Fimberpass - Fimbertal ( Fimbabach ) - Ischgl to Silvretta (27)

This definition is widely used.

The Fimber Pass at 2608 m connects the Samnaun group with the Silvretta group, the lowest point is the Sanna estuary at Landeck at 775 m . This results in a total profile difference of 2519 m and a total height of 686 m for the group. So it rises enormously high above the deeply cut Inntal and is little set off from the Silvretta. In fact, the group only forms the eastern foothills of the large group, once known as the Verwall Alps , which stretches eastward from the Flüela as a side group and merges into the Northern Limestone Alps on the Arlberg . This is highlighted by the Rhone-Rotten-Vorderrhein- Inn, the most powerful diagonal fault in the Alpine mass, from the main Alpine ridge .

Outline and subgroups

The alpine club leader Samnaun group divides the mountains into three subgroups. The subgroups do not have their own names. They are only defined by their limits.

North ridge, between Landeck and Flathjoch : In this part of the Samnaun group are the three-thousand-meter Hexenkopf and Furgler.
Between Flathjoch and Zeblasjoch : This is the middle part of the Samnaun group with the three thousand meter Vesulspitze and Bürkelkopf.
Southern part, south and east of the Zeblasjoch: In this part, which is almost exclusively in Graubünden, there is the Muttler, the highest mountain in the Samnaun group, as well as several other three-thousand-meter peaks. This part is delimited by the Samnaun in the north.

Some of these peaks also have secondary peaks over 3000 m: In the long ridge of Piz Mundin and in the west ridge of the Stammerspitze, a few other peaks rise up to 30 m high. Finally there is a 3029 m high north-east summit of the Bürkelkopf (which is only one meter lower than the main summit) with a height of approx. 35 m.

Protected areas

In accordance with Article 5 of the Federal Act on Nature Conservation and Heritage Protection, Switzerland keeps a federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments of national importance . In the Samnaun group there is currently one of these landscapes:

Huts

There are three Alpine Club huts in the Tyrolean part of the Samnaun group.

Ascher Hut : Altitude: 2256 m , open in summer from the beginning of July to mid-September and in winter on request, 40 mattress dormitories, winter room with 10 dormitories and AV lock, valley location: lake in the Paznaun valley , walking time from the Medrig-Alm (lift): 2 Hours
Hexenseehütte : Altitude: 2588 m , open in summer from July to around 10 September (advance notice at the Cologne house!) And in winter until Easter only during the day, 28 mattress dormitories, winter room with 2 dormitories, not locked, valley location: Serfaus, walking time from Serfaus: 5 hours
Kölner Haus : Altitude: 1965 m , open in summer from mid-June to mid-September and in winter from mid-December to Easter (prior written notice!), 48 beds and 18 mattress dormitories, valley location: Serfaus, walking time from Serfaus: 1.5 hours

Long-distance / long-distance hiking trails

The Zentralalpenweg 02 , one of the 10 Austrian long-distance hiking trails, also leads through the Samnaun group. This route runs through parts of the Central Alps with two alternative routes.

The easier alternative route (section 18.1) reaches the Samnaun group near Prutz am Inn. From there it goes via Serfaus , St. Zeno, the Furglerjoch and the Medrigjoch to See , Kappl and Ischgl in the Paznaun Valley .

The high alpine alternative (section 18.2) reaches the Samnaun group near Pfunds in the Inn Valley. From there the route leads via Lafairs and Tschupbach to St. Zeno and from there on as in section 18.1.

Ski areas

There are the following ski areas in the Samnaun group:

Silvretta Arena : Valley locations are Ischgl in the Paznaun Valley and Samnaun Ravaisch, a large ski area with three almost parallel feeder lifts

Medrigjoch-See : Talort is a lake in the Paznaun Valley, a smaller family ski area
Serfaus – Fiss – Ladis : Valley locations are Fiss and Serfaus in a balcony location above the Oberinntal, a large ski area with cable cars across several valleys, the Pezidbahn was opened in the 2004/05 season, an 8-seater gondola lift as a feeder to the Masner ski area over the Arrezjoch . It replaces a curved surface lift.
