The Hexenkopf is a 3035  m above sea level. A. high mountain of the Samnaun group in the Austrian state of Tyrol .

Location and surroundings

The Hexenkopf is located in the northern ridge of the Samnaun group between the Paznaun valley in the north and the Oberinntal in the south. The neighboring mountain in the west is the 2914  m high Gmaierkopf , in the south, separated by the Hexensattel, the 2,828  m high Masnerkopf . To the southeast lies the Masneralpe , which is made accessible for winter sports through the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area . With the Hexenseehütte ( 2588  m ) on the Hexensee , one of the most important bases for climbing the Hexenkopf can be found here. In the east, the 2685  m high Masnerjoch separates the Hexenkopf from the 2845  m high Arrezkopf , this ridge continues to the east to the 3004  m high Furgler . To the north a mountain ridge to the Plattkopf ( 2893  m ) separates the Hinterflathalpe in the west from the Berglialpe in the east.

geology

The witch's head is largely made up of mica-rich slate gneiss , which is traversed by veins of pegmatite and other granitic rocks. Furthermore, small deposits of amphibolite with a high concentration of hornblende can be found.

Climbs

In contrast to the nearby and much-traveled Furgler, the Hexenkopf is rarely climbed. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that it is further away from the mountain station of the Lazidbahn in Serfaus , and on the other hand, it is more difficult.

From the Masnerjoch, a marked trail leads west first, and finally over the northern ridge of the Hexenkopf to the summit. There are climbing points of difficulty I (UIAA) to be overcome on the exposed block ridge . The Masnerjoch can be reached from the Hexenseehütte, from the Kölner Haus ( 1965  m ) near Serfaus or from the north of See in the Paznaun Valley. The Ascher Hut ( 2256  m ) is also a possible base here.

Another marked but pathless ascent leads from Hexensattel over the south ridge to the summit.
