The Silvretta Arena is a ski area in Ischgl ( Tyrol , Austria ) and Samnaun ( Graubünden , Switzerland ). The first lift went into operation in Ischgl in 1963. Today 45 lifts transport winter sports enthusiasts up to an altitude of 2870  m . There are 238 kilometers of slopes (515 hectares) available, of which up to 80 percent can be covered with snow with the help of 1100 snow cannons. This makes it the third largest ski area in Tyrol . The total transport capacity of the mountain railways in the ski area is approx. 93,000 people per hour. There are also 14 mountain restaurants and ski huts in the entire area. There are also 74 km of cross-country trails and three toboggan runs with a total of 12 km in length. The season opening and the end of the season are regularly celebrated with large pop concerts. In addition to other events, three big pop concerts form fixed points in every winter season. International stars of the music industry will be on stage in Ischgl as part of the Top of the Mountain Concerts at the opening, at Easter and the season finale .

In summer it is a popular hiking and mountain biking region.

history

The first slopes and lifts 1961–1969

The foundation stone for the creation of the Silvretta Arena was laid by 73 shareholders, the majority of whom were farmers from Ischgl and the surrounding area, when Silvrettaseilbahn AG was founded on April 18, 1961, with the aim of promoting the construction of a cable car in Ischgl. The shareholders of the still young cable car company were convinced in the following weeks to invest their capital in the construction of a cable car, so that the contracts for the construction of the Silvrettabahn could already be awarded on May 25th . The following year construction work began on the valley and mountain stations. The valley station was built on an agriculturally used area behind Ischgl, the mountain station on the Idalp above the existing Alpenhaus, the operator of which also ran a ski school. In August 1962, the suspension cable of the new cable car was transported through the Montafon and over the Silvretta High Alpine Road to Ischgl under very difficult conditions . A transport over the Paznauntalstraße was not possible because it was too narrow.

During the inspection of the Silvrettabahn, shortly after its completion, on March 16, 1963, a tragic accident occurred in which a suspension cable tore and a cabin fell. The occupants were seriously injured and it seemed as if the project for a cable car in Ischgl was over. But the reconstruction began immediately, so that the Silvrettabahn could start operating on December 15, 1963. At 10:00 a.m., the aerial tram took its first guest up to the Idalp. A few days later, on December 21, the first ski lift in the ski area, the Idjoch lift, went into operation.

Just one year later, the mountain station of the Silvrettabahn on the Idalp was expanded to such an extent that a kiosk was opened there in December 1964, thus creating a second possibility to get something to eat in addition to the already existing Alpenhaus. In 1966 the construction of the second lift from Höllboden to Idalp began, which should create the possibility to get back to Idalp from Höllboden without descending into the valley. The Höllboden lift went into operation on December 18, 1966 . In the following years, the number of ski guests increased enormously, so that for the first time in the 1967/68 season, seat tickets were issued for the ride on the Silvrettabahn and later a discount on rides in the early morning hours and on weekly tickets that were only valid from 1:00 p.m. , was granted. Waiting times of up to six hours had to be accepted in order to purchase a reservation card the day before the journey.

For the 1968/69 season, the cable car company leased the Edelweißlift near the center of Ischgl and added the Madleinlift to the resort's ski lifts the following year. In the same year, a garage was built at the valley station of the Idjoch lift for the piste equipment purchased two years earlier, which could initially only prepare flatter sections of the piste; at this point there were neither straightened nor designated slopes; only suggestions were drawn on the cards.

Opening of the Samnaun ski area and upswing 1970–1985

In the summer of 1970, the run to the Ischgl district of Prenner was reforested and leveled, and the two outdated piste machines were replaced by a modern one. This made it possible for the first time in the 1970/71 season to ski on a groomed slope right into the center of Ischgl. In the same year, when the Velilllift went into operation, the area above the Idalp towards Bürkelkopf was opened up and an area with some slopes that are also suitable for beginners. Due to the new runs and lifts, the rush to the Silvrettabahn increased in the 1970/71 season, so that after the season the construction of the Pardatschgratbahn was decided.

Before the winter season 1972/73, the development of the area around Höllkar and Palinkopf began; for this purpose, the routes for the Höllkar and Palinkopf lifts were laid on the very loamy soil. During the season, the Edelweißlift , which had been dismantled in Ischgl , went into operation in Mathon , along with the purchased Nederlelift and the Bruckschlögellift . In the following year, together with the construction of the Pardatschgratbahnbergstation, the kiosk and the restaurant on the Pardatschgrat were rebuilt. On March 8, 1973 the Höllkar lift , and with it the slopes from Höllkar to Höllboden, went into operation before the Pardatschgratbahn , with its silver 4-person gondolas, passed its inspection on March 17 and could be used by skiers . At that time it was the first monocable gondola in Austria. At the same time, thanks to the relief, the sale of reservation tickets on the Silvrettabahn could be stopped again for the first time in over six years.

On December 22nd, 1973, when the Palinkopf lift went into operation, the development of the ski area between Höllboden and Palinkopf was initially completed. One year later, with the opening of the Sassgalun lift and the descent, the first step towards opening up the area in the inner Fimbatal and around the Paznauner Taja was taken. In the following summer 1975, the restaurant building on Höllboden, as well as the Paznauner Tayalift and the Bodenalm lift were built. In addition, the runs into the inner Fimbatal have been reforested and the Silvretta Arena has been enriched with a few runs around the Paznauner Taja and Bodenalp . In the 1975/76 winter season, the two feeder railways , the Silvretta and Pardatschgratbahn, reached their capacity limits again, so that the decision was made to build the Fimbabahn , which also began the following summer. Also in the summer of 1976, the Pardatschgrat lift was built, which was supposed to transport skiers from above the Idalp to the Pardatschgrat to enable a descent with the Pardatschgratbahn and to relieve the Silvrettabahn. The Pardatschgrat lift went into operation on December 24, 1976, the Fimbabahn , with its colorful 4-person gondolas, on December 31.

Shortly after the establishment of Bergbahnen Samnaun AG in 1977, the Silvrettaseilbahn AG decided to take a 51% stake and thus secured the financing of a cable car, three tow lifts, two mountain restaurants and the runs in Swiss territory. Preparations for the construction of the Alp Trida and Alp Trida Sattel mountain restaurants , the cable car and the laying of the routes for the Alp-Trida, Viderjoch and Visnitz lifts and the reforestation of the valley runs began in the same year. After a few delays, the Sonnenlift was opened in the area above Idalp on December 14, 1977 . One month later, on January 6, 1978, the Höllspitz lift , which connects the Paznauner Taja with the Höllspitze, went into operation. With it some new runs of the category medium and difficult were opened in the Fimbatal. Also in the same season, the Höllbodenbahn 2-seater chairlift went into operation on February 6, 1978 . It was the first chairlift in the Silvretta Arena and replaced the completely overwhelmed Höllboden lift , in front of which very long queues often formed after opening up to Fimbatal, Paznauner Taja, Höllkar and Palinkopf.

Cross-border skiing was possible in the Silvretta Arena from December 16, 1978, when the Alp-Trida and Viderjoch lifts and the aerial cableway in Samnaunn started operating. At the same time, a ski pass allocation key was developed, which was used in the same year. Four weeks later, on January 21, 1979, the ski area was officially opened on the Swiss side. The Visnitz lift went into operation on the same day . The number of visitors in the first season exceeded all expectations.

To relieve the Palinkopf lift , the Schwarzwand lift was built behind the Schwarzwand restaurant in the summer of 1979 . At the same time, the Nederlelift in Mathon , which was bought in 1972, was demolished and construction of the new chairlift up to the Idjoch began. On March 26, 1980, the new detachable 3-seater Idjochbahn chairlift went into operation and replaced the drag lift built in 1963. In the summer of 1980, the Muller , Viderjoch-II , Höllkar-II and Blais Grondalifts were built, and the restaurants Höllboden and Schwarzwand were completely rebuilt. The valley run from Zeblasjoch to Samnaunn was leveled in the same year and opened for the new season. In January 1981 the Velilllift was converted into a double tow lift and the Greitspitzlift went into operation. It makes it possible to get from the Idjoch to the Greitspitz.

In the summer of 1982, lines for a snow-making system were laid in the ski area for the first time. A year later, the call for relief of the feeder railways in Ischgl was again loud, as already two years after the construction of the Fimbabahn (1978) the waiting times in front of the railways in the valley had increased again. After long discussions in the village, it was decided to replace the old Silvretta aerial tramway from 1963 with a monocable gondola with 6-person gondolas. The new Silvrettabahn with its wine-red gondolas started operating as early as December 7, 1983 . The snow-making system was completed in the 1983/84 winter season with a snow cannon on the Prennerhang and made artificial snow-making possible for the first time this season. Before the 1983/84 season, the Alp Trida restaurant was renovated and expanded at the same time. The following summer, the Alp Trida-Sattel restaurant, which had previously only been set up temporarily, was replaced by the Sattel panorama restaurant.

In the summer of 1985, additional small lifts, such as the Milolift , which was named after the owner of the Alp Trida, Milo Bigler, were built on Alp Trida. At the same time, the Palinkopf lift was replaced by the Palinkopfbahn double chairlift . Only 11 years after the new construction of the restaurant building on the Pardatschgrat, the building had to be demolished and rebuilt because of the poor ground conditions and the resulting cracks. A total of 17 new piste machines were also purchased between 1970 and 1985 to prepare the increased number of slopes.

Renewal of all feeder lifts and first concerts 1986–1999

After two somewhat quieter years, the valley run from Alp Trida to Laret was widened and leveled at the same time in the summer of 1987. In the following summer, the major Gampenbahn project was implemented. The construction of the longest detachable 4-seater chairlift in Austria, from Gampenalp to Palinkopf, was completed in just five months. With the Gampenbahn , the ski area was expanded further east for the 1988/89 season, with additional slopes, some of them through the Vesil valley. After the season, the snow-making systems in the lower part of the ski area, i.e. the area between Ischgl and Idalp, were once again significantly expanded. At the same time, more fresh water and sewage pipes were laid and all mountain restaurants were connected to the local sewage system. Also in the summer of 1989, the Höllboden double chairlift from 1978 was replaced by a 4-seater chairlift.

Immediately after the end of the 1989/90 winter season, the demolition of the Pardatschgratbahn from the early 1970s began. It was initially to be replaced by a six-person gondola lift. After the state government did not issue a permit for this, a more modern 4-seater gondola lift, again with silver gondolas, was built. A year later, the muller lift , which was only eleven years old, was dismantled and rebuilt as the Alp Trider corner lift above Alp Trida. The Muller lift was replaced by the Mullerbahn 4-seater chairlift . At the same time, a new fully automatic high-pressure snow-making system was put into operation.

In the summer of 1992, a 34,000 m² Idalp reservoir was excavated on the Idalp in order to supply the new snowmaking systems with stored water. In the same summer, the Schwarzwand restaurant was demolished and rebuilt. To relieve the 13-year-old Idjochbahn, the detachable 4-seater Flimjochbahn chairlift from Idalp to Viderjoch was built the following summer , creating a second possibility to get from Idalp directly to the Swiss part of the Silvretta Arena. At the same time, the Velilleckbahn double chairlift was built in the Velilltal , which from the 1993/94 winter season made it possible to travel through the Velilltal without taking the valley train. After the season the Flimsattelbahn was built, which significantly shortened the route between Alp Trida and Idalp. During the same period, the Höllspitz lift above the Paznauner Taja was dismantled and replaced by the Höllspitzbahn 4-seater chairlift .

Since 1993, several concerts have been held in Ischgl at the beginning and the end of the season, but the climax of the young Ischgel concert history was the final concert of the 1994/95 season with the appearance of Elton John .

In the summer of 1995, the double -decker lift was built in Samnaun as the first double-decker aerial tramway with a capacity of 180 people per cabin in just five months of construction. At the same time, the Samnaun mountain railways built a new mountain restaurant on Alp Bella. In contrast, the parallel demolition of the Velilllift , the new construction of the 6-seater Velillbahn chairlift on the Idalp and the extensive renovation of the Idalp restaurant almost disappeared . At the end of the 1995/96 season, Tina Turner performed in Ischgl.

After the 1995/96 winter season, the last ski lift still in the center, the Madelein lift, was dismantled due to insufficient use. In the same summer, the Palinkopfbahn was converted from a 2-seater chairlift to a detachable 4-seater chairlift. In the Swiss part of the ski area, the 4-seater chairlift Grivaleabahn was built from Alp Bella to below Grivalea. This means that the new restaurant on Alp Bella has been better connected and the ski area has been expanded to include another slope. With the completion of the first section of the snow-making system on Alp Trida, the first snow-making system in the Samnaun part of the ski area was put into operation. A year later, the Sassgalun lift was replaced by a 6-seater chairlift, which now relieves the Höllboden bottleneck somewhat. At the same time, the Zeblas run in the center of Samnaun was expanded and straightened and the snow-making systems on Alp Trida were expanded. The snow-making systems have also been expanded below the Idjoch and above the Idalp.

In the summer of 1998, another major construction project was on the agenda: The old Fimbabahn with its colorful 4-person cabins was completely dismantled and sold to Eastern Europe. The area between the valley and middle station of the Silvrettabahn , which opened in 1983, was also demolished and rebuilt as the new Fimbabahn together with a new valley station building between the valley station of the Fimbabahn and the middle station of the old Silvrettabahn . The Silvrettabahn was rebuilt to the west along its old route as a Funitel two-cable gondola with 24-person gondolas. During the same period, the Höllkar lifts were dismantled and replaced by the 6-seater Höllkarbahn chairlift and the Greitspitzbahn was built, which now creates a second option alongside the Viderjochlift II to get from the Planer-Salaas to the Ischgel part of the ski area. One year later, in the summer of 1999, the Schwarzwasser lift was built on the flat section between the Paznauner Taja and the middle stations of the Silvretta and Fimbabahn . Since the slope has only a minimal gradient in this area, the descent was previously very difficult, but the entrance is above the exit, which is unusual for a ski lift. In the same summer, Alp Trida was rebuilt again and provided with comprehensive avalanche protection based on the impressions of the avalanche accident in Galtür .

3S-Pardatschgratbahn and Piz Val Gronda project 2000 – today

Even in the new millennium, construction activity in the Silvretta Arena continued unhindered. In the summer of 2000 the Schwarzwand lift behind the Schwarzwand restaurant was removed and replaced by the new Zeblasbahn , which now runs largely parallel to the Palinkopfbahn . At the same time, the Höllboden lift on Höllboden was converted from a 4-seater chairlift to an 8-seater chairlift, which was necessary in the preseason after long queues in front of the lift. This makes it the lift with the highest transport capacity in the entire ski area. That same summer was Bodenalplift replaced by a 4-seater chairlift and the neighboring Ischgl lift by the 6-seater chairlift neighboring Ischgl train . In the following summer, the 3-seater Idjochbahn chairlift, built in 1980, was replaced by an 8-seater chairlift, the Höllboden restaurant with the Turm-Salettl was extensively rebuilt and expanded and the construction of a rescue station on the Idalp began.

After the 2001/02 winter season, the very steep Pardatschgrat lift, which is difficult to master for inexperienced skiers, was removed and replaced by the 6-seater Grat lift . At the same time, the restaurant in the Alp Bella ski house was generously expanded and renovated. The rescue station with helicopter landing pad on the Idalp, which has been under construction since 2001, was completed. In the following summer, the Paznauner Thayalift was removed and replaced by a 6-seater chairlift. In parallel, of the ski in the part Samnauner Viderjochlift removed and the Viderjochbahn I replaced.

Immediately after the end of the 2003/04 season, the restaurant, which was built on the Pardatschgrat in 1985, had to be demolished again, as in 1985, due to settlement cracks caused by the poor ground conditions. The new Pardorama restaurant was then built on the Pardatschgrat with a self-service and service restaurant, as well as a glass facade, a conference room and a sun terrace. To avoid further problems with the subsoil, the entire building is supported on a height-adjustable 3-point foundation. At the same time, the 6-seater chairlift Nachtweidebahn was built in the Idalp area , which expanded the ski area by two more runs and at the same time straightened out the area around the Höllboden. In the same summer, the Viderjochbahn II was built, which replaced the Viderjochlift II , and the snowmaking systems in the Alp Trida, Alp Bella and Zeblas areas were further expanded.

In the summer of 2006, the oldest mountain restaurant in the ski area, the Alpenhaus, was demolished and rebuilt. During the planning, emphasis was placed on preserving the charm of the old Alpine house from the late 1950s. After the 2006/07 winter season, the Fimbabahn, which went into operation in 1987 as the Silvrettabahn, was dismantled and replaced by an 8-seater gondola lift with a new valley station building and heated seats. At the same time, the new restaurant Salaas, in an oval design, was built on the Planer Salaas. A year later, the kiosk on Gampenalp was also torn down and replaced by the new Gampen bistro. In 2009, the Edelweiß lift , which was relocated to Mathon in 1973, was dismantled and replaced by the Mathon practice lift . In the following summer, the Lange Wandbahn was built as a 6-seater chairlift along the steepest slope in the ski area from Höllboden to Greitspitze with a 70% gradient . At the same time, the 4-seater Mullerbahn chairlift was expanded into a 6-seater chairlift with hoods.

The Sonnenlift practice lift on the Idalp was removed in summer 2011 and replaced by a 6-seater chairlift specially designed for children. Before the 2012/13 season, the Sattel panorama restaurant on Alp Trida Sattel and the Höllboden restaurant were completely renovated. In September 2012, after many years of negotiations with the nature conservation authority, the Silvrettaseilbahn AG received the building permit for the Piz-Val-Gronda-Bahn under strict conditions. On June 20, 2013, construction work began on the new 3S Padashgrad Railway . By the start of the 2013 season, the concrete work at the valley and mountain stations had largely been completed and all six columns up to 60 meters high were installed. At the same time, the snowmaking and avalanche protection systems in the areas of Alp Trida, Alp Trida Sattel, Alp Bella and Visnitz were further expanded and the Samnaun ski trail was built.

Between 2000 and 2013, the snow-making systems on the Höllkar and around the Paznauner Taja were expanded and storage ponds were built above the Idalp, behind the Schwarzwand restaurant and on the Velill, as well as the Viderjoch reservoir on the Swiss side . The latter at 2664  m above sea level. M. is one of the highest reservoirs in Switzerland. To further secure the water supply, further pumping stations were built on the Bodenalp from the Fimbabach , on the Idalp and on the Palinkopf. In total, over 240 km of water pipes were laid to supply the snow cannons . In the meantime, over 36 piste machines are out and about every night during the season to prepare the slopes.

On December 20, 2013, the Piz-Val-Gronda-Bahn started operation from above the Gampenalp to the Piz Val Gronda after a festive opening. The construction method had to be very environmentally friendly, which is why the valley and mountain station buildings were built as small as possible and there are only two cable car supports between the mountain and valley stations . When creating the slope, no changes to nature were allowed.

Immediately after the end of the 2013/14 season, the removal of the old Pardatschgratbahn between the valley and middle stations began. The section between the middle and mountain stations has been slightly revised and remains under the name Pardoramabahn , as the new 3S Pardatschgratbahn does not have a middle station. The old valley station building was completely demolished and a new, two-part building was erected in the same place, consisting of a cable car section north of the Fimbabbach and an infrastructure section with a ski depot, sports shops and fully covered cash desk south of the Fimbabbach. The new Pardatschgratbahn went into operation on December 27, 2014 . The dismantling of the old 4-seater Flimjochbahn chairlift, which was sold to Scheregesch (southern Siberia), began on May 12, 2016 . Immediately after the demolition, the construction of the new 8-seater chairlift began. The valley station received two basement floors, in which u. a., similar to the Idjochbahn, there are garages for snow groomers . The mountain station was given an enclosure to protect the exit area from the wind. At the same time, the Ischgl Skyfly zip line was built, with which people can slide on a 2-kilometer stretch up to 50 meters above the ground, since autumn 2016, from the middle station of the Silvrettabahn to the valley station of the Padaschgradbahn. Also in the summer of 2016, the entire ski area was equipped with a new slope guidance system, which replaced the outdated slope guidance system, which mainly consisted of wooden boards, and 40 new propeller snow cannons were installed.

For the 2017/18 winter season, the 4-seater chairlift Palinkopfbahn, which had existed since 1996, was replaced by a new 6-seater chairlift with a glass dome and seat heating based on the D-Line system from Doppelmayr. Furthermore, the Idalp reservoir, which is located on an unstable slope, had to be abandoned and replaced by the Viderböden reservoir .

In the summer of 2018, another major investment was made with the completely new construction of the 30-year-old Gampenbahn. The 4-seater chairlift from 1988 was removed and a new 6-seater chairlift with D-Line technology from Doppelmayr was built in its place. In addition, a new “Ischgl Slope Food” snack bar was built in place of the former Gampen bistro. In addition, a new “Gampenalpe” restaurant was built in the same summer. The new 6-seater Gampenbahn E4 is the longest six-seater chairlift in the world at 924 meters.

Planning

It was planned to replace the 2-seater chairlift “Vellileck” with a new Doppelmayr D-Line 6-seater chairlift and to extend it in the process. The new cable car will then have its valley station in the middle of the Vellil valley (near the valley station of the old 2-seater chairlift). The future mountain station will be on the Pardatschgrat, so there is no need to take the Pardorama cable car to get back to the Pardatschgrat or the Breiech Idalpe. From pictures published by the Silvrettaseilbahn AG it can be seen that native plant species can be seen on the back of the chairs.

Furthermore, the 4-seater Visnitzbahn in Samnaun was to be removed in summer 2019 and replaced by a new, modern 8-seater chairlift. Bergbahnen Samnaun planned to expand their ski area with two new six-person chairlifts in the Ravaischer Salaas area. The new “Morell” 6-seater chairlift, which would lead from the Ravaischer Salaas to the Greitspitze, and the “Ravaischer Salaas” 6-seater chairlift, which would start right next to the Morellbahn and lead to the Salaaser head. This expansion would force a new Höllkarbahn to be built on the Salaaser Kopf, as otherwise there would be a gap and capacity bottlenecks in the Höllkar area would occur. A chairlift "Saalaser Kopf D3", which would start in Höllkar at the Palinkopf chairlifts, would also be possible. The Bergbahnen Samnaun also want to build two new feeder lifts to reinforce the two aerial tramways. The 8-seater gondola lift Samnaun Laret and a 3S cable car from Samnauner Dorf to the Salaaser Kopf would be new.

Silvrettabahn in summer

In the summer months, the region is a popular holiday area. The Ischgl Ironbike takes place every year in August, where professional and amateur bikers compete against each other on routes of varying degrees of difficulty. A similar event takes place for runners who have to climb up to the 3000  m high Kronenjoch. A total of five cable cars are available for hikers, three on the Swiss side ( double-decker cable car Samnaun , Alp Trider Sattelbahn , Flimsattelbahn ), two on the Austrian one ( Silvrettabahn , Flimjochbahn ), which lead up to the 2757  m high Viderjoch. A tour network of more than 1200 km is available for mountain bikers. This makes the region one of the largest in the Alps. Offers such as the Ischgl Skyfly can also be used in summer.

Special

Longest slope

With a length of eleven kilometers, the Eleven , which leads from the Greitspitze over the Idalp to Ischgl, is the longest slope in the ski area. Thereby 1501 meters of altitude are overcome ( 2872  m - 1371  m ).

Steepest slope

The steepest slope in the area leads from the Greitspitze with a gradient of up to 70% to the valley station of the Langen Wandbahn . It is 1.8 km long and climbs 633 meters. There are 45 km of black runs in total.

Lift systems

Fimbabahn and Silvrettabahn

There are currently 45 lifts in the Silvretta Arena which together have a total transport capacity of approx. 94,500 people per hour. The Silvrettabahn double single- cable gondola lift has the highest single transport capacity with 3,440 people per hour, which is also the longest cable car in the ski area. It runs from Silvrettaplatz up to Idalp. The highest vertical drop, with 1,251 meters, overcomes the three cable orbit Pardatschgratbahn that from the eastern village of Ischgl on the 2624  m runs high Pardatschgrat.

Samnaun double-decker railway

The largest cabin capacity, on the other hand, is the double-decker aerial tramway with 180-passenger gondolas, 110 of which can be found on the lower level and 70 on the upper level. It transports people from Samnaun-Ravaisch to the Alp Trider Sattel.
