history

The village was settled by the Walsers in the 13th century . In the Urbar of the Lords of Rottenburg is around 1360 Muntane mentioned. Muntan means 'alpine region' in Romanic . A permanent settlement developed from the original alp in the 13th or 14th century. Initially only the shady side (Nederseite) was settled, only later the forest on the sunny side was cleared to gain pastureland and fields.

In legal terms, Mathon originally belonged to Nauders and the Lower Engadine (until 1652) and thus ecclesiastically to Sins , Diocese of Chur (1807). Until the 15th century, the dead had to be taken to the local St. Peters Church for burial.

In the 18th century, gold was dug above Mathon and a mine was built, of which a 20 m long tunnel is still preserved today. Around 1820 the town had 132 inhabitants, the whole town 220. In the 19th century there was economic hardship, trade no longer played a role in Paznaun and agriculture was insufficient to feed the population during the little “Ice Age” . Many residents emigrated as shepherds, day laborers or craftsmen, the population stagnated (1826: 221 inhabitants, 1887: 220 inhabitants).

Tourism began at the end of the 19th century (1861: first ascent of the Fluchthorn , 1908 construction of the Kathreinhütte, today Friedrichshafner Hütte , on the Muttenalpe), which became the most important source of income with the construction of the first cable car in Ischgl in 1963.

Due to its location, Mathon was repeatedly hit by natural disasters. In the summer of 1896, a mudslide threatened Valzur. Since it caused only minor damage, the residents built the Lourdes Chapel as a fulfillment of a promise. One day after the great avalanche disaster in Galtür , another avalanche buried half of the hamlet of Untervalzur on February 24, 1999 . Seven people were killed. During the floods in August 2005 , the entire valley floor near Mathon was devastated, with the Trisanna digging a completely new river bed.
