List of ski resorts in Switzerland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of ski areas in Switzerland gives an overview of the ski areas in Switzerland .

history

Although skiing was not invented in Switzerland, skiing quickly caught on in Switzerland, mainly due to the large number of winter tourists. St. Moritz describes itself as the birthplace of winter tourism and sports in the Alps (1864/65) and founded the first Swiss ski school in 1929. The world's first modern ski lift ( System Constam ) was built in Davos in 1934 .

Winter is of great importance for Swiss tourism. However, climate change and tough competitive pressure mean that banks and the state are no longer investing in systems for ski areas below 1500  m above sea level. M. are supported. Large ski areas with a starting height of 700  m above sea level. M. such as Kitzbühel in Austria would be unthinkable in Switzerland. The concentration process of the ski areas led to the amalgamation of ski regions in several places, also across national borders. Some of them are marketed together and listed as a ski area for the sake of simplicity.

Many Swiss ski areas are located directly in the Alpine region. Glacier ski areas such as Zermatt (largest year-round ski area in the Alps with 1.41 million skiing days in 2014/2015) offer winter sports opportunities throughout the year. One of the world's largest ski areas, Les Portes du Soleil with 204 lifts and 650 kilometers of slopes, is located in the border region between Switzerland and France. In terms of frequency, Zermatt St. Moritz (with 1.12 million skiing days), Adelboden-Lenk (1.1 million), Les quatre Vallées (1.03 million), Jungfrau region (0.98 million) and Davos-Klosters follow the front-runner (0.94 million). In total, the Swiss ski areas recorded 22.6 million skiing days in the 2014/2015 winter season. Since the 2008/2009 winter season with 28 million skiing days, the ski resorts have had to accept a decline in visitors of around 20 percent, with the cantons of Graubünden and Bern most affected. There were fewer decreases in Valais, while Central and Eastern Switzerland even recorded a slight increase. One main reason is that young people today ski significantly less than previous generations. Nevertheless, around 2.5 million people still ski in Switzerland.

Overview of the most important Swiss ski areas

Divided into regions from west to east, then according to the size of the ski areas.

About the slopes in kilometers: Many ski areas indicate that the slopes are too long. The German cartographer and journalist Christoph Schrahe had already noticed and criticized this in 2013. He has developed a method and a seal of approval to correct this and to indicate correct slope lengths.
