Riederalp is a merged municipality in the Ostlich Raron district in the Swiss canton of Valais . It is located southeast of the Aletsch Forest , in the area of the Jungfrau-Aletsch mountain region, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 , and is thus part of the Aletsch area .

The community was founded on November 1st, 2003 through the merger of the previously independent communities of Goppisberg , Greich and Ried-Mörel .

Historically, the ski area commonly known today as Riederalp consists of three Alps, from west to east the Riederalp, the Greicheralp and the Goppisberger Alp, which belonged to the respective hillside villages of Ried, Greich and Goppisberg.

The new community as a whole has not had a coat of arms since its merger in 2003; several proposals were consistently rejected by the authority. The coat of arms with three stars as a symbol for the communities, mountains and glaciers was only accepted by the voters on November 30, 2008.
tourism
Riederalp is car-free and lives primarily from tourism . In winter, winter sports enthusiasts have around 104 km of slopes and 34 lifts at their disposal in the Aletsch Arena ski area . A new 4-seater Hohfluh chairlift has been in operation since December 5, 2009 . In summer the community is the starting point for hikers and bikers. The suspension bridge that opened in summer 2008 and connects Riederalp with Belalp is an attraction . The 9-hole golf course on Riederalp is the highest in Europe .

In Mörel there is a Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn station (MGB, timetable field 610).
Riederalp is with the big cable car Mörel -Riederalp-center or the 6-seater gondola reachable Mörel-Mörel-Riederalp-West.
On December 14, 1996 at 9:40 am, a cable car accident occurred near the Riederalp – Moosfluh gondola. The axis of the pulley in the valley station broke and several cabins hit the ground due to the significantly increased rope slack. One passenger died, 18 passengers suffered injuries.
