Bister is a Munizipalgemeinde ( political municipality ) and a civil parish on the southern side of the Rotten (Rhone) in the Ostlich Raron district of the canton of Valais , Switzerland . With 30 inhabitants (as of the end of 2013) it is the smallest municipality in Valais.

geography

Bister is located in the upper Valais on the south side of the valley at the foot of the Bättlihorn (2992 m above sea level). The Rotten forms the northern border of the municipality, which consists of the village of Bister and the hamlets of Bänna, Chrizacher and Egga as well as some alpine meadows. Neighboring communities are Grengiols in the east, Termen in the south and Mörel-Filet in the west and north. The entire municipal area of ​​Bister has been within the Binntal Landscape Park since 2009 and thus forms the western border of the nature park.

At the end of 2017, the community had 32 residents. It is one of the smallest communities in Switzerland. The majority of the population are farmers, teachers or retirees.

The municipality of Bister is led by the eldest municipality president of the canton of Valais. Edwin Zeiter was elected to the local council in 1972 and was elected mayor in 1976. On August 27, 2017, a celebration of his 40th anniversary was held in Bister. He was elected several times in municipal council elections with 100% of the vote. Two years later a book by Edwin Zeiter was published: "Edwin Zeiter Life, Work, Process". This gave a celebration in which over 100 people kept in attendance.
