Martisberg was until December 31, 2013 a municipality in the Ostlich Raron district in the German-speaking part of the Swiss canton of Valais . On January 1, 2014, the municipality merged with Betten to form the new municipality of Bettmeralp .
With only 20 inhabitants, it was one of the three smallest municipalities in Switzerland on December 31, 2007; three years earlier it had 28 inhabitants (1850: 90 inhabitants).
geography
Martisberg is located in Upper Valais on the northern side of the valley high above the valley floor of the Rhone Valley at 1,367 m above sea level. Until December 31, 2013 it was bordered by Lax in the north and east , Grengiols in the south and Betten in the west .
history
First attested in 1311, Martisberg formed its own Kastlanei from 1263 to 1798 . Ecclesiastically, the community, first mentioned in 1351 as “communitas”, first belonged to Mörel , from 1634 to Grengiols and from 1959 to Lax; the chapel of St. Mary and St. Martin, mentioned in 1697 (where the place name comes from), was replaced in 1950/1951 by a chapel dedicated to St. Anthony. In 2014 Martisberg joined the municipality of Betten, which has since been known as “Bettmeralp”, which is better known in tourism circles.
