Waitstate

A wait state (WS) is a wait cycle of a processor , indicated in clock cycles that will be inserted, in order for a slower memory has applied the requested data correctly at the output, and there will be no errors in the processing.

For this reason one works today with additional, fast buffer memory, called cache . Here, too, there are wait states, but this term also appears in other areas: Whenever fast components have to access slower ones.
