Oberiberg is a municipality in the district of Schwyz in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland . It is located on the Ibergereggstrasse between Einsiedeln and Schwyz .

history

Historic aerial photo by Werner Friedli from 1958

The area around Iberg called "S'Ibrig" by the locals, takes its name from the yew tree . Emperor Heinrich II donated it to Einsiedeln Abbey in 1018. Later it came into the possession of the municipality of Schwyz, which used it as a summer pasture. The region was heavily forested and only converted into large areas of pastureland through clearing between the 16th and 19th centuries. At the beginning of the 20th century the population lived almost exclusively from alpine farming, Oberiberg was soon discovered as a health resort and tourism began to become an important livelihood for the community. In 1938 a ski lift was built (only the third in all of Switzerland).

When Meinrad Lienert filmed the novel Der Doppelte Matthias und seine Töchter in 1941 , the exterior shots took place above Oberiberg on the «Guggern».
