Sattel is a municipality in the district of Schwyz in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland .

geography

Historic aerial photo by Werner Friedli from 1948

.

The towns of Ecce Homo , Schornen and Mostel belong to Sattel .

The neighboring communities of Sattel are Rothenthurm , Schwyz , Steinen and Steinerberg , Oberägeri , Unterägeri .

Sattel is located in the valley section of the Steiner Aa , at the foot of the Morgartenberg, Chaiserstock and Hochstuckli and extends to the heights of these foothills of the Alps. The wooded landscape shows clear traces of the ice ages with moraines , rock bars and alluvial plains . During the last Ice Age, the Muota / Reussgletschter completely covered the saddle and had two foothills that reached to Unterägeri and Äussere Altmatt (Rothenthurm). In the äüsseren Altmatt of the Muota- / met Reuss glacier and Reuss and Linth / Rhine glacier together. There these glaciers joined and built a moraine that is still visible today.

population

97.29% of the residents are German-speaking, 0.5% English-speaking and 0.43% Albanian-speaking (as of 2000). Since 1992 the population has increased by 10.5%.

executive

The community president is Adolf Lüönd-Diener (presidium, agriculture). Vice-President is Christine Betschart (Society and Social Affairs). Other council members are: Peter Zundel (finance), Roland Schnüriger (infrastructure and public transport), Andrea Betschart (economics), Hans Peter Schnüriger (education and youth), Felix Schraner (construction, planning, environmental protection).

Parish hall

What was once built as a parsonage in the 18th century and the schoolhouse from 1810 to 1960 served as a community hall from 1976 to 2014. In late autumn 2014, a new, functional parish hall was able to be moved into the newly created center on the center square.

economy

Agriculture strongly shapes the appearance of the community. However, only limited conclusions can be drawn from this about the employment structure. Of the around 540 people employed in Sattel (as of 2012), only around 180 (32%) are still active in agriculture and forestry. 12% (66 people) are employed in craft and trade, while the remaining 55% (around 300) work in the service sector. 23% of the almost 1000 employed people work in Sattel and 77% of these employed people earn their living as commuters outside the municipality, especially in Schwyz and the Zug region. While jobs in agriculture and forestry are declining, small and medium-sized businesses have created numerous new jobs in recent years. Employment in the tourism sector, which offers over a hundred full and part-time jobs, is becoming increasingly important. These part-time jobs are indispensable earning opportunities for farmers or their wives, who in many cases are dependent on a part-time job due to the structure of the farm. More and more students can now be found working part-time in the tourism sector. The lack of industrial and large service companies naturally has a negative effect on the municipality's tax income. Thanks to the growth of the last 30 years and the intra-cantonal financial equalization, the municipality of Sattel can fulfill its tasks in an expedient manner and this with a tax rate in the kant. Medium.

traffic

The Sattel-Aegeri train station is located in the municipality of Sattel , which is shared with the neighboring municipality of Oberägeri and is served by the Swiss Southeastern Railway (SOB). In the newly created center, a bus junction was installed at which all bus lines coming together in Sattel meet, thus enabling lean connections: Oberägeri-Sattel bus from Zugerland Verkehrsbetriebe , Schwyz-Sattel-Biberbrugg bus from Auto AG Schwyz . Goldau-Sattel bus. The main road 8 , which leads over the Sattel Pass from Pfäffikon to Schwyz , and the main roads 381 and 371 lead through Sattel. Since 2011, the Voralpen-Express has stopped in Rothenthurm again instead of in Sattel.

tourism

With the ski and local recreation area Sattel-Hochstuckli (first revolving gondola in the world “Stuckli Rondo”, three ski lifts, summer toboggan run “Stuckli Run”, jumping and bouncy castle “Stuckli Jump”, hiking trails, etc.) and the nearby Aegerisee lake, Sattel is also diverse tourist offer available. The opening of the “Stuckli Run” summer toboggan run has given summer tourism a boost and defused the one-sided winter dependency. On July 10, 2010 the “ Raiffeisen Skywalk ”, one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in Europe with a span of 374 meters, was opened.

The three-hour circular hike for the Sattel Fortress Trail starts at the roundabout near Sattel and passes various fortresses from the Second World War. The Swiss Dufour Museum Association conducts monthly tours through the artillery factory on Alp Halsegg. The AW Spitz and the Eggeli tunnel facility in the village of Sattel, which was used in 1941 as the KP Front command post and fire control center of the 6th Division for the AW Spitz and Stock as an advanced KP, can be visited on request from the Schwyz Fortifications Foundation .

Battle of the Morgarten

Letziturm and Morgarten battle chapel in Schornen

In the municipality of Sattel, in the hamlet of Schornen am Morgarten, a battle took place on November 15, 1315 between a Habsburg army under Duke Leopold of Austria and the Schwyzians with their allies , which went down in history as the "first freedom battle " of the Confederates. The ducal army was crushed. Numerous noblemen lost their lives in the process. A chapel in the Schornen and the Morgartendenkmal at Buechwäldli on the Aegerisee are a reminder of this. In the Morgarten Information Center, which was opened in 2015, the history of Morgarten is presented in a contemporary form on the basis of current scientific knowledge. A major focus is on the history of the impact of this event (www.morgarten.ch).

Niderösthaus from 1176 in Schornen

For the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Morgarten, the Niderösthaus next to the Morgartenhaus was rebuilt in its original state for museum purposes in 2015 . The Niderösthaus is the oldest known wooden building in Europe. Its core structure dates from around 1176. The house stood in Schwyz until 2001 and was inhabited. Then it had to make way for a new building, was removed, dismantled and stored.
