Lauerz is a municipality in the district of Schwyz in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland .

geography

Lauerz is located in the foothills of the Alps at the northeastern foot of the Rigi , directly on the Lauerzersee (450 m above sea level). The island of Schwanau in the Lauerzersee belongs to the municipality of Lauerz. The parish church of St. Nicholas is located in the center of the village. In the municipality there are many individual farms, on the lakeshore and on the hillside the place has numerous holiday homes.

Surname

An earlier spelling is "Lowerz". It is very doubtful whether ore deposits in the municipality gave the village its name. Likewise, “Lau” does not come from the Celtic “lokwa”, which means “lake”. It is more likely that the name “Lauerz” is related to an Old High German personal name such as “Lauwart”. The original form should have been called «Lauwerts hov», although the word for the court has been omitted.

history

Schwanau Island, historical aerial photo by Werner Friedli from 1960

In the 13th century there was a castle on the island of Schwanau, which is now a ruin. It was originally Kyburgish, later the area around Lauerz became the property of the Habsburgs.

From 1480, a St. Theodul chapel was known as a branch of the Schwyz parish. After a fire, the chapel was rebuilt in 1508. From 1600 Lauerz was its own parish. In 1675, a new building for the St. Nicholas Church replaced the chapel.

On September 2, 1806, large parts of the village were destroyed by a tidal wave triggered by the Goldau landslide . The church was rebuilt from 1807-10 according to plans by Father Jakob Natter. Hermits gave up their previous dwelling on the island of Schwanau. The island was acquired by the governor of Schwyz, Louis Auf der Maur. It has been owned by the Canton of Schwyz since 1967.
